This was a side project given to me at Miura. It was developed as a social experiment to observe whether the My Three Words concept (see blog posting) would gain traction with web surfers. From a technical point of view it can be seen as a multi-user realtime collaborative story writing system.

I built the site using the Kohana3 MVC framework, coupled with Memcached and MySQL for data storage. The site makes heavy use of AJAX. The site allows users to share user generated content via Twitter and Facebook. There is also an administration back-end which allows for user entries to be censored and re-used in future content.

I also developed the Facebook application – http://apps.facebook.com/mythreewords/ – incorporating the Facebook Javascript APIs and XFBML code to provide basic social networking functionality such as sending friend invitiations.

This project involved translating the existing Symbian website (symbian.org) into Japanese whilst enabling support for future languages to be easily added. Every single translate-able element on the website had to be worked on and it had to work properly on mobile devices too. Content translation was provided by the Symbian team and I was responsible for making the necessary changes to the codebase.

The original English website was built in Drupal with a heavily customised theme. It contained dynamic Flash content (including the use of sIFR) and utilised a number of Views and Blocks as well as various different Node types. I was able to utilise i18n and other associated modules to enable translation support. Beyond this I had to hack a few modules and the theme with custom code to ensure translation worked seamlessly with the existing website structure and content. These changes included updating the Trigger module to be locale-aware amongst other code changes. I also ensured made it easy to create language and platform-specific CSS and Javascript with a simple selection algorithm.

This project involved developing a web-based game which would enable players to gain an understanding of the various global and national CO2 emission targets with regards to the power sector. Later on I also helped to develop a target converter for use at the UNFCCC Copenhagen summit in December and by the wider public.

Client: Be The Cause, USA

Be The Cause run an annual event called the Walk for Hope which raises money for various charities as well as inspiring people in the process. They wanted to replace their existing website with something which had a lot more functionality. Specifically, the general requirements were:

• User should be able to register on the site either as charities or as walkers (people intending to join the walk). Administrators must approve a charity before it becomes visible.
• Anybody should be able pledge money towards a charity (although the actual payment would be handled on the charity’s website itself).
• All registered users should be able to edit their profile details and upload a profile picture.
• It should be possible to search for specific walkers or charities.
• Administrators should be able to edit and delete any walker or charity as well as be able to see all pledges made.

I had input into designing the page layout, however the front-end colour scheme was heavily customised by the client to their liking.

Client: Sandbag Climate Campaign, UK
Date: February 2009 – December 2009

Sandbag Climate Campaign wanted to improve and enhance their website. I was partly responsible for maintenance and improvement of the website and contributed numerous enhancements to make the website better for both users and administrators. Some of the major items:

• An automated build system and functional tests to ensure payment systems integration (Google Checkout, Paypal) was working correctly.
• Membership-related features: forum access, a membership report for admins showing a breakdown of petition signatories, payments made, permit certificate requirements, etc.
• Helped to build a public data API (outputs XML or JSON) for carbon emission data (see it: json, xml).
• Helped to build a global “power map” utilising Google Maps (see it).
• A page for users to download CO2 emissions data from the Sandbag database (see it).
• Embeddable widgets utilising good use of XHTML, CSS and JavaScript (see it).
• A Drupal module which allowed for Sandbag to setup ‘public actions’, e.g. online petitions which could be signed by users and then sent to one or more intended recipients (see it).

The Social Entrepreneurs’ Trust needed a web page which gave a brief overview of their purpose and activities. They provided me with content for the page – I designed and implemented the logo and look and feel.
